Thursdays at 10:30 am
This group meets generally on the first Thursday of the month. Please note that in July, we will meet on the second Thursday.
July 13th – The Transit of Venus by Shirley Hazzard This winner of the National Book Critic’s Circle Award and finalist for the National Book Award tells the story of two orphaned sisters who leave post-war Australia to start new lives in England.
August 3rd – Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy by Carlos Eire In his poignant memoir, Eire recounts his life as one of 14,000 children airlifted out of Cuba in 1962 without his parents.
September 7th – The Summer Before the War by Simonson This delightful book describes the changes in a small country town in England as World War I begins.
October 5th – Miller’s Valley by Anna Quindlen This novel is about a woman coming of age, as she unearths secrets about her family and her town, and surprising truths about herself.
November 2nd – Learning to Die in Miami by Carlos Eire This sequel to Waiting for Snow in Havana details Eire’s life as a young immigrant in the United States.
Women were granted the right to vote in 1917, three years before it was enacted federally. In honor of the 100th anniversary, we will be reading these books in November and December.
November 2nd – Elizabeth Cady Stanton: An American Life by Lori Ginzberg “In this subtly crafted biography, the historian Lori D. Ginzberg narrates the life of a woman of great charm, enormous appetite, and extraordinary intellectual gifts who turned the limitations placed on women like herself into a universal philosophy of equal rights.”
December 7th – Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier This novel follows two families in early 20th century England and the changing social and political climate including the push for women’s suffrage.
